Costa Rica: Deliberative process

Oct 18, 2017 by Gloria Gutierrez

Results from the bilateral conference between Canada and Costa Rica.

Canada is facing a big problem of contamination. Their main problem is the Tar Sand, that is a mixture of mostly sand, clay, water, and a thick, molasses-like substance called bitumen. Tar Sands created more carbon emissions than surface mining and also contaminate water and land.

A similarity between both problems which are the Crucitas Mine and the Tar Sand, is that both of them contaminate water and land. In the Crucitas mine, water is contaminated do to the substance (mercury) they use to extract the gold. In the Tar Sand water is also polluted do to the chemicals they use and the amount of water they need to extract the oil. The land in both Crucitas Mine and Tar Sand is contaminated and it is because of the substances they use and also because of the area they take to do the extraction.

One difference is that more indigenous people are being affected in the Tar Sand than the Crucitas Mine. The Tar Sand is taking place near the indigenous communities so it contaminates their land and their water.

This conference helped me realize that we are not alone and that the things we do affect other people. Money isn't everything, we must take care of the environment.

Great thoughts Gloria, Costa Rica is definitely not alone, the activities of companies that deal on natural resources affect the environment the world over, thankfully, technological advancements is helping create more energy efficient practices that would lead to decreased negative environmental impact.

And for sure, money is not everything, we only have one planet and we all have a duty to take care of it for ourselves and for generations to come.

Coming to that realization is great but ultimately the aim is to spur you to action.

We must all act now, our green future begins today......:)
