Costa Rica: Deliberative process

Oct 19, 2017 by Marisol Sanchez

A) The similarities and differences in your findings

Similarities

  • Both the Tar sands and the Crucitas project include mercury which compromised the health of many people not only in the area but also people around it or near it. Tar sands and mining in Crucitas caused problems in people's immune, nervous and respiratory system.
  • Both cases cause a huge amount of contamination and deforestation.

Differences

  • After what happened in Crucitas, the government established a law which said that there could be no mining with the exception of mining for subsistence, also the Infinite Gold Company which was the company in charge of Project Crucitas wasn't given the permits to continue their project. The court and different environmental groups who weren't in favor of this project made it possible for it to be canceled, on the other hand, as our partners in Canada mentioned, the government isn't helping to put a stop to what is happening with Tar Sands in Alberta which isn't Costa Rica's case.

You are definitely right Marisol, the activities of companies that deal on natural resources affect the environment the world over, thankfully, technological advancements and  government regulations are helping create more energy efficient processes and practices that would lead to decreased negative environmental impact and help in the fight against climate.

On our part, with the knowledge we are acquiring, we are obligated to apply this knowledge in the care of our environment for ourselves and for generations to come.

We must all act now, our green future begins today......:)
