United States: 2a. Climate Change is Our Shared Problem

Oct 7, 2017 by aarthivenkatraman

1. What are the most relevant actions/targets proposed in SDG#13?

I think the two most relevant targets/actions proposed are all countries have to consistently contribute to stopping climate change, and developed countries will dedicate a total of 100 billion dollars to climate change related needs of developing countries from 2020 to 2025. No one action from one country can stop the entire world's contribution to climate change. In order to do that, all countries have to consistently be involved in reducing their carbon footprint. The target of donating 100 billion a year to developing is very relevant as well. This is because while developing, developed countries emitted a lot of carbon dioxide. Therefore, it is fair that developing countries get a chance to develop as well. However, if developed countries gave money to developing countries, developing countries could still develop, but use that money to pay for more green ways to do it.

2. How do SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities?

SDG#13 responds to effects of climate change in water in both indigenous and non - indigenous communities by spreading money everywhere to all communities so that they can use this money to ensure their water is clean. Also, the Paris Agreement represents the effects of climate change in all areas because it brings together leaders from all over the world that help to represent their areas and the issues and progress they are having.

3. What other areas do you think should be taken into account?

I think SDG#13 should also take into account more specifically about water. Water quality, lack of water, sea level rise, etc. This is important because climate change affects all of these things. For example, when the earth is heated more glaciers are melted and the water in oceans expands and islands get flooded. After the climate is warmer, more water evaporates from the ocean and comes down in flooding, and other natural disasters, like hurricanes. When flooding happens there is there is so much water that it all soaks in the ground so fast that there is not enough time for the gpround to filter out the water. Then when we humans use that groundwater the quality is not very good. Water is connected to our climate in too many ways to be left out of any actions to stop climate change.

4. What elements would you incorporate if you had to build and action/target that addressed water, Indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous people? Provide a brief rationale that justifies each element.

I would incorporate the ability for indigenous communities to stay in complete control of their water sources unless they completely understand and agree to a deal with another region. This is needed because a lot of indigenous peoples' resources have been taken away, and then they don't have the resources they need to survive. I would also incorporate the fact that if one of the two peoples (indigenous and non - indigenous) are having a serious lack or contamination of water, the other would help out by offering them water of better quality if they have it. This is important because we all need to help each other otherwise we will not be able to survive. To ensure the status of water is good is everyone's responsibility.
