Costa Rica: Colonial Context

Sep 26, 2017 by Gloria Gutierrez
  • How does your footprint reflect the economy of your country, including its colonial relations?

Costa Rica capacity of gHa per person is 1.5 mines is more than that. Even thought we try to recycle more and use less electricity we are not able to be in that average. In my house we are 5 and each one of us have a car which it generates a lot of CO2, that’s the mayor reason why we can be in the 1.5 average that Costa Rica offers.

The mayor problem in Costa Rica is the amount of cars on the streets. Our streets are not design for the amount of cars circulating every day. Because of the amount of cars there is always traffic which provokes a huge amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. We should implement the idea of carpooling that way there will be fewer cars in the streets. In my house carpooling is kind of hard because we go to complete different places so this wouldn’t be an option, but we could use more public transportations. There is always a way to achieve things, we just need to sacrifice our comfort.

  • How are the effects of climate change related with power imbalances among countries or within countries?

In the last 4 weeks there have been 3 hurricanes, one after the other. Hurricanes use warm, moist air as fuel. That is why they form only over warm ocean waters. Now in day the temperature has increased that’s why there have been so many hurricanes. At school we received a course about climate change and one of the things they told us was that the CO2 in the atmosphere is maintained in the ozone layer as energy, as you may know water is a great energy absorber so it absorbs the energy and by doing this it evaporates. I think that maybe this has something to do with the temperature increase and the hurricanes.
