How Colonization and Economy changes carbon footprint

Environment   Sep 17, 2017 by ethanchang

I live in the United States, a country driven by consumerism. The problem is, many people focus on money to buy more cars, toys, and use electricity. As a lucky child in a privileged region, me and many of my peers have the problem. Because of that, people constantly buy and use things without properly maintaining the carbon or waste usage. This is because of the economy and mindset.

In the past, like many gold and silver rushes, people are so quick and in a hurry to find money and resources. They don't properly realize how much damage they are doing to the environment until far too late.  I live nearby a place that had a huge gold rush in 1849. What ended up happening is that many plants were killed, the water was drained from rivers which also killed the fish. Because everything is connected, the areas suffered a huge drain after the quest for gold was over. That happened because the local government was in a hurry to make money instead of thinking about the future.

In the colonial days of North America, when many Europeans came over, the indigenous population were the Native Americans/Indians. The native groups believed in some form of balance and control of life as part of their religion. However, the settlers cut down forests and killed many animals to an unhealthy extent that hasn't been recovered even today. This is because people- again- were too focused on settling, getting, and using instead of thinking about long term solutions.
