Costa Rica: Colonial Context

Environment   Sep 23, 2017 by sofia ferreiro
  • How does your footprint reflect the economy of your country, including its colonial relations?

My footprint was really high but most of it was because two ways one was about the transportation. In a country like Costa Rica people should use more bicycles or even public transportation. Costa Rica should have a subway that could help a lot with the carbon footprint that the country has within transportation. Also schools should have like a plan for carpooling, my idea is that the school should have like an app that says the location of all the students and like kids from the same condo should do carpool In that way we could help reduce all our carbon footprint in the transportation side. My other reason that my carbon footprint was really high was food. People may think that this is not a problem that involves us, but just by eating more locally grown food our carbon footprint within the food can be even smaller. For a "Green country" like Costa Rica the education should explain more of these factors in school because "education is the key to success" so If our population understands these things the footprint of the country would be much smaller.

  • How are the effects of climate change related with power imbalances among countries or within countries?

With all the things happening right now in the world it´s really hard to not say that climate change its affecting the world, all of us. With power imbalances among countries the richest countries like USA, China, Japan etc.. obviously have the biggest companies and affect more the climate that poor countries like the  Democratic Republic of Congo or Liberia. These countries are not develop like the richest so they don't affect climate change like the others

Great suggestions Sofia, and you can follow up these great ideas with your school, great ideas start small. But another way of doing this is, will be by using a school bus? what do you think?

Yes! eating locally grown food is great for the environment. Other environmentally friendly habits include; skipping bottled water, buying a coffee tumbler, taking your own grocery bags to the store, lowering the thermostat in your home, unplugging appliances when they are not in use, using hand towels instead of paper towels, going paperless, knowing your impact, not forgetting the 3Rs.... you can add to the list, there is so much more we can do to reduce our ecological foot print.

Education is definitely a big one, it provides adequate response to climate change challenge by strengthening the capacity of people to make judgments and choices in favour of sustainable development and also relevant for innovation and creative use of technology.  Do you have any plans/ideas how to use your knowledge to help people in your family or community learn more about climate change?

The recent hurricane events are really unfortunate. Our prayers are with those affected by this horrible events. But this should really challenge us to reduce our ecological foot prints because even though, climate change and hurricanes may not be directly related (at least from what we know presently) but weather experts believe that the warming of the climate has increased sea levels and the probabilities of heavy rains that made the hurricanes a lot more dangerous. I believe that every country developed or not can still adjust their ways of life to make the environment more sustainable. Think about it and lets discuss more on how this can be achievable. We can all do more. Nice pictures you shared....)

Cheers

Yes, I totally agree the school bus idea I would take that into account. Yes the hurricanes are letting people know that climate change its a real thing and a bis problem that our world is going through
