Environment   Aug 24, 2017 by Lucia Torres Bustamante

A sustainable world, a perfect planet Earth. Can you imagine? By "perfect" I don't mean that there are no problems. What I mean is that in a sustainable world we could be able to mitigate the problems that humans produce. Let's face it, it's not realistic to think that tomorrow we can stop the burning of fossil fuels, just as we can't decide one day to stop cutting trees because it's too harming for the environment. These are just unrealistic things; it's not that humans are all selfish, but that this society has needs to fulfill. Even if all the people in the world were educated enough about this topic or even if all of us decided to do our best not to harm the environment, it’s not like we can stop producing. Think about all the needs you have in just one day.

What is my vision for a sustainable world?

My vision for a sustainable world is simple but needs the compromise of all human kind to be accomplished. This world would be one in which we fulfill our necessities but without over doing, without producing more that we can consume. Also, that the raw materials used for the creation of the things we use can be returned to where they come from. For example, if there’s a pencil company, the ideal would be that whatever amount of trees they need to cut can be later regrown.

What are you planning to do to make this vision a reality?

Let’s take this step by step. First, what can people do? We as individuals impact more the planet as we think we do. You, the one who is reading this, I what to challenge you with this. For a whole week you will not use a single plastic-made object (plastic bottles or other containers, plates, straws, etc.) It sounds easy enough and insignificant but trust me, this is one of the best things you can do for the environment as an individual.

Second, what can you do as a community (school, neighborhood, etc.)? Imagine if all of the people in your school would recycle all the paper they use in a whole month. Can you imagine how much paper would that be? The ideal would be not to use paper, in a school that’s pretty unrealistic but if you can give the idea to stop or lower the use of paper in the whole school that would be great.

Third, what can companies do to contribute in this journey to sustainability? Different companies produce millions and millions of products that can fulfill all the needs someone can have in a lifetime. The thing is that they produce so much that at least half goes to waste. What we can do is to find a way to convince different companies that they don’t have to produce like crazy. If they do this not only less product gets thrown away but as they produce less the polluting waste made by these companies decreases.

What impact has colonization has on our journey to a sustainable planet?

Thanks to colonization we had made certain processes more efficient like agriculture and the production of daily necessities and off course the kind of technology we enjoy today, but as I see it this “colonization” has only gone half way through. What I mean by this is that, yes, this modernization has made everything easier but now is the time to not only make it easier but also environmentally friendly. In my opinion, right now colonization has done more harm but this is also how we grow, how we are getting to the kind of technology that can help us be a sustainable world. There are new inventions being made every day to make sure this planet can survive. This is all a process and by making the mistakes now is how we can get to a sustainable world.
