Oil Extraction in the Mecca Community in California.
Recently, there was an oil extraction in Mecca which is owned by the Cabazon band of mission Indians. The short-term problems are safety, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and cold or flu-like symptoms. The long-term problems are odors, soil contamination, and water contamination. The government and the people benefit from this resource extraction. This connects to colonization because the government has already colonized a place to mine for oil which the place haven’t been mined for oil before. The indigenous people have been complaining about odors from the oil mining and the indigenous people’s leaders have been complaining to the government. None of them are conflicts yet and the indigenous interests are at stake because their crops will die from the contaminated soil and they can’t drink the water from lakes and rivers.

Hi! Thanks for your post. I'm interested in the conflicts that you mentioned in the Mecca-Cabazon situation. What's your opinion on the situation? What do you think are the costs/benefits of extracting oil in this location?
