United States: 2c. Case Study

Environment   Oct 18, 2017 by haydenboone

My research topic was deforestation. The reason people cut down trees is to get the wood, which is used for a number of things. Wood is commonly used as a building material, it also provides paper, and is used to make fuel. Deforestation clears forests so we can use that land. Deforestation helps us meet some of our everyday needs, however, it also had dire consequences for the environment. One of the most severe impacts deforestation has on the environment is that is destroys animals’ habitats. National Geographic says, “Eighty percent of Earth's land animals and plants live in forests,” but without much of their habitat, those animals will struggle to survive. Another tremendous impact it has on the environment is that with fewer trees to take in carbon dioxide, more carbon dioxide can be emitted. Furthermore, when those leftover tree stumps are left to rot, the rotting creates even more carbon dioxide. This is one of the main causes of climate change.

Hi Hayden, thanks for your post. I am wondering: how do you see deforestation as connected to colonization?
