CILT- BRASÍLIA- BRAZIL- CLASS: 2D Teacher Cristina Loureço 2D

Extraction of iron ore pellets causes a direct impact on nature leading to deterioration of the environment. Here in Brazil, the extraction of this type of ore is generally done through the garment industry, which is now done with the help of machines that produce impacts in river environments, destroying river banks and modifying the geographic landscape and in the long term, this practice can destroy more than the banks of the rivers, such as the tragedy in Mariana-Minas Gerais, caused by the rupture of a dam and totally destroying the entire city. Nature stands in the way of such strong machines. The mining is related to colonization because it is a way to explore the soil, just as they did in the time of the colony Brazil. The areas affected by the samarco disaster are being highly preserved after the mud from the rivers have been removed because they are waters used for people's use, but the miner should do more than that in my opinion and help preserve more areas that were affected by the exploitation of ores. The disaster caused by Samarco contributed much to the climate change because after the drought of the water that collapsed everything became mud causing an intense drought in Minas Gerais. All of this seriously damaged the indigenous, non-indigenous, and had a huge impact on environmental activists and the government, who had to deal with Samarco's delay in taking action on the disaster. I think the Government should punish Samarco for what it did, so that it would help preserve other places beyond the city of Mariana, so that it could get more help to preserve other areas with the deteriorated environment.

Hi Luiza,

Thank you for sharing your research. It seems like the water impact was very significant and influenced many interest groups. I am curious, what was the response from indigenous groups? I understand their lives were impacted, but I wonder if this led them to try and get the government to take more action to protect the environment and to require companies to take more action for their responsibilities. Interesting research!

Allison
