Ghana: My Virtual Profile

Environment   Sep 28, 2017 by Seyram Sunu-Attah

A sustainable planet is a place where the inhabitants can make use of the resources it offers without exhausting them thus making it available for the next generation.

In this sustainable world, people would feel inclined to use what they need in order to avoid wastage. The inhabitants would always have the next generation in mind when taking actions. If this vision comes true, the planet would be a never ending plethora of ecosystems.

In order to bring this vision to life, drastic measures have to be taken.

As an individual, I would strive to make an impact by adhering to the simple ways I can sustain the environment. These practices are; attending cleaning exercises in the community, avoid littering, reduce wastage of food and resources, avoid the use of plastics etc.

Furthermore, education is the most powerful weapon which one can be used to change the world( Nelson Mandela). I believe that educating people about the true impact of their actions would inculcate change in the world. Making people aware of the significance of the environment and how the destruction of it can affect us as human beings. This could be done through fund raisers, formal education, media, forums etc.

In addition, a sustainable environment could become a reality by the practice of recycling. Recycling is the process of re-using a material or substance in order to regulate or decrease the rate at which it is exhausted or eliminated. In Ghana, there are numerous organizations which manage recycling of material and waste some of them are; ZOOMLION Ghana Limited, Jekora Ventures Limited , Safi Sana Ghana Limited and many more.

Surprisingly, there is a unique correlation between colonization and sustaining the environment. Ghana was colonized by the British therefore has its share of the effects. As Barack Obama said “The worst thing colonialism did was to cloud our view of the past” Africans were made to accept the way of the white because we were told and convinced it was the best. Unfortunately, this is still happening. All the destructive practices which degrade the earth, brought to us by the oppressors are accepted without question due to the mindset of them always being right. Africans abandoned their eco-friendly ways and accepted industrialization, inventions and many others which destroy the environment.

During colonization there are many conflicts between the oppressors and the oppressed for the struggle for independence. The wars and conflicts destroy the environment with the use of bombs, unemployment of farmers and several others and this could take a long time to repair. Also, colonization leads to the neglect of the environment and what it offers, when these conflicts are prolonged the people of that community have that appalling mindset engraved in their brains even when the war or conflict has been resolved.
