What are the most relevant actions/targets proposed in SDG#13
One of the most relevant actions and targets proposed in SDG#13 is to “improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.” The first step in making sure that we can fight against climate change, we as a global community need to learn what the problems in front of each individual before being able to take action. I also believe that the more informed citizens across the world are, the more aware we can all become of our actions in order to work together as a whole, recognizing our individual impacts and overcoming them with improved ways. This is a very relevant topic, because there are many individuals that are not aware of the effects on climate change, and what is really happening in the world around them. Although many might think that climate change is not regarded seriously, the large problem is the lack of knowledge. As more and more people gain information about climate change and it’s effect worldwide, the more people who will be compelled to help take action against climate change in the coming future.
How do SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities?
The SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change by creating action target 13.2 which states that this target will, “Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies, and planning.” This target is setting the goal for both indigenous and non-indigenous communities in order to manage the resource consumption globally for the broader effect for climate change to be battled. While water is included in a great part of this measure, this action target will strive towards creating a balanced system in which communities can create a regulated use of natural resources to be globally put in place. This way, each community can come together with the larger network of communities creating our world and create a balanced use of natural resources. As we work together to eliminate the waste, and create cleaner water for our consumption and use, we need to all agree to the same terms in order to create an equal balance amongst communities.
What other areas do you think should be taken into account
I think that the production and manufacturing of products around the globe needs to be taken into account as well. Although many regulations have been put in place in order to prevent the most harmful gasses emitted into the atmosphere, the millions of factories around the world are still spewing out carbon dioxide to this very moment. There are other alternatives that need to be implemented throughout the world in order to gain full stability. Largely, we are focusing on natural resources that need to be preserved from climate change, however, we are doing nothing to help the cause. If we are to create a better environment for all creatures on Earth, the source of the carbon dioxide needs to be discontinued. Other alternatives are available, and would result in major lifts off of carbon footprints. Before we start focusing in on the affected community of climate change, we need to rid the source of much of the carbon dioxide that is being emitted into the atmosphere.
What elements would you incorporate if you had to build and action/target that addressed water, Indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous people. Provide a brief rationale that justifies each element.
If I were to build an action/target that addressed water, indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous peoples, I would incorporate the appropriate handling of water around the globe. Much water is wasted every day due to improper drainage systems as well as unprotected water reservoirs from mining equipment and other chemicals used for a variety of purposes. Although there are many water reservoirs, the actual quality of the water within is not the correct cleanliness. Many communities cannot afford or do not have a clean water system in order to filter the water that is consumed and used on a day to day basis. With the continuously increasing in use of chemicals and other harmful toxins, we need to be protecting each individual from the bacteria that may reside in water. By providing the proper filtering systems, indigenous and non-indigenous alike can have access to clean water. Proper drainage systems also impact water usage. Pipes, drains, and many other means of water disposal all lead into larger masses of water. Without the proper drainage, water can become greatly polluted from the overload of non-natural substances.
