United States: 2A: Pre-Bilateral - Indigenous responses to climate change

Environment   Sep 25, 2017 by alexandrachatwin

What are the most relevant actions/targets proposed in SDG#13

The most relevant action and target proposed in SDG#13 is to “improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.” I think that this target in important because in order for countries to decide to commit themselves to solving the problems of climate change, they must first be fully educated about the topic. I also think that providing more education on climate change would lead more countries to realize the full extend of the damage that it is doing and these countries would be more likely to participate and take action against climate change. This target is relevant currently because right now, not many people know that the ice melting, more hurricanes forming, and the lowering supply of freshwater is due to climate change. If we can inform them about this, then more people will take action because of all the damage climate change is doing and all the damage it will continue to do in the future.

How do SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities?

The SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by climate change to indigenous and non indigenous communities because they created target 13.2 which states that they will “Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.” This addresses both indigenous and non-indigenous communities because if you create national policies that regulate water and resource use, these policies will not only apply to the non-indigenous citizens, but to the indigenous people too. This target will help both of these communities because the effects of climate change affect everyone including indigenous and non-indigenous communities. If both of these communities work together to face the challenges of climate change, they are more likely to be successful and eliminate the problem for everyone.

What other areas do you think should be taken into account

I think that natural resource depletion should be taken into account because since we as humans are using so many materials that are naturally formed by the Earth, eventually they are going to run out and we are going to be stuck in this world with nothing natural such as carbon-dioxide taking in trees that can help us battle climate change. We constantly take advantage of the resources the Earth has provided us with such as clean water, ice, and trees, so much that even though these resources continue to re-build themselves, we destroy them before they have time to fully reemerge. This will eventually lead to us depleting these natural materials. We not only need to take into account how climate change is affecting the Earth, but also what we are doing to help climate change on its path of destruction.

What elements would you incorporate if you had to build and action/target that addressed water, Indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous people. Provide a brief rationale that justifies each element.

I would incorporate reservoirs and water treatment plants if I had to build an action/target that addressed water, indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous people. This would help the storage of water because reservoirs are created and maintained to keep water and save it for when the people of that area are in dire need of water then their water management would be much more effective. To continue on water management, there could also be water treatment plants that used water could be sent to. These plants would make the water usable, although not drinkable. This water could be used to water plants at community places such as the park, or at each individual's house. Together, this would make a big difference in the amount of water being used. This applies not only to non-indigenous people, but to indigenous, too. You could have the indigenous people work together with the non-indigenous people to discuss how to promote these reservoirs and treatment plants so that both sides are a part of the discussion.
