Kenya: Climate change is our shared problem

Sep 24, 2017 by Tracy Cherotich

What are the most relevant actions/targets proposed in SDG#13

The most relevant targets proposed by SDG#13 according to me would be SDG#13.2 and 13.3 which state:

13.2 Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning

13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning

By integrating climate change measures into national policies, we would be increasing the country's adaptability to impacts of climate change and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Improving the education of the public is also key as they would understand the policies being put into place and the vast effects of climate change.

How do SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities?

SDG#13 responds by stating that one of their targets is to implement the commitment taken by developed countries to jointly raise $100 billion annually by 2020 from all sources to address the needs of developing countries

What other areas do you think should be taken into account

A clear budget should have been included of how the money raised will be allocated to the developing countries and also taking into account the countries most to least at risk of experiencing the impacts of climate change.

What elements would you incorporate if you had to build and action/target that addressed water, Indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous people. Provide a brief rationale that justifies each element.

More education should be provided to the non-indigenous people on their water usage and how it affects other people. This will help in reducing the amount of water wasted thus conserving our water sources.

We should also provide more information and education to the indigenous people on any action plans taken that would directly affect them. This is because maybe what we believe is best for them at that specific time may not be what they need. We could also teach these indigenous people new methods of water collection and conservation so as to not drain their already existing water sources

Hi Tracy, thank you for your post. I think you make an interesting proposal in terms of the elements you would incorporate if you had to build an action plan, but I would encourage you to be more specific. Use the links you watched to help you develop ideas.

I also like your idea of budget breakdown in terms of how the collected funds are distributed - can you elaborate on this? How do you see this being implemented?
