Ghana: Activity 1A My virtual profile

Environment   Sep 21, 2017 by Kelvin Sarpong

          • A) What is your vision for a sustainable world?

A sustainable world is a world that meets the needs of the current population without depriving the future generation of the ability to meet their own needs. I believe this is a world in which as a citizen of the earth, everyone is aware that their lifestyle and consumption patterns have an impact on the environment and other regions. A primary concern of this is that to create and maintain a sustainable world, we need to make more use of sustainable energy. These are clean, renewable sources of energy, as compared to non-renewable forms of energy, which apart from their rapid depletion, their usage usually includes the emmision of greenhouse gases which contributes towards the greenhouse effect. A prime concern of my vision for a sustainable world, is to create a global awareness of these renewable sources of energy and to find efficient methods to exploit them.

          •  B) What are you planning to do to make this vision a reality?

To make this vision a reality, firstly, I would organize multiple events or begin an initiative in which the goal is to create awareness of these renewable energy sources such as tidal and geothermal energy. I believe that a part of the reason to which why they are not used, is the fact that, in some communities, people may not even be aware of their existence, and what it means for a sustainable world. I believe that, if more people are educated about these energy resources, the fact that their usage doesn't include the emmision of greenhouse gases, it will be a big step towards creating a sustainable world. It can be something as small as powering your home with solar panels or something as big as a country getting majority of its energy from a dam that produces hydroelectric energy, such as Ghana, where a huge percentage of its energy resources come from the Akosombo Dam which produces hydroelectric power for the whole country.

          • C) What impact has colonization had on our journey to a sustainable planet?

Colonization, as a whole, has had both positive and negative impacts on the world. On the positive side, colonization exposed people to the way of life of other people from different places. It helped to spread new ideas and technology around the world, which helped to improve the lives of other people. However with colonization, came about the spread of diseases to the new lands. The indigenous people and even their livestock, may have never been exposed to these diseases, and therefore, as a result, had no way of counteracting it, which lead to many deaths. In addition, colonization may have led to the overpopulation of the new area which takes us a step back from creating a sustainable planet.
