Kenya: pre- bilateral 2a

Environment   Sep 18, 2017 by Lisa Ndegwa

What are the most relevant actions/targets proposed in SDG#13?

I think the most relevant action targeted in SDG#13. Is the third point stating that ‘developed countries have committed to jointly mobilizing $100 billion per year by 2020 to address the climate-related needs of developing countries and to continue that level of support through 2025. Initial efforts to mobilize resources for the Green Climate Fund raised $10.3 billion and developed - country parties are strongly urged to scale up their financial support.’ This shows that developed nations have committed to contribute funds to address climate issues they face using a time frame and a reasonable amount.

How do SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities?

SDG#13 responds to the challenges by the effects of climate change in water in both indigenous and non- indigenous communities by: countries successfully completing and submitting the first iteration of their national adaptation plans, in response to climate change; mobilizing $100 billion per year by 2020 to address the climate-related needs; indicating that environmental impact assessments, legislation on protected areas, climate change adaptation projects and programs; and integrated planning in reducing underlying risk factors.

What other areas do you think should be taken into account?

I think a watch dog should be taken into account to ensure the money the developing countries are contributing should be distributed evenly and taken care of. Although the response to the challenges of climate change were stated I think it was too vague and it should mention the first iteration national plans, risk reduction strategies and the environmental projects and programs. The cause of the climate change related issues should be an area taken into account, this will inform and educate people on what caused the climate related issues and what they can do about it to reduce it.

What elements would you incorporate if you had to build and action/target that addressed water, Indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous people?

I would educate the people first about changes in water, ocean acidification, sea level rise, fresh water availability and melting artic sea. I will inform them about how it affects them and their future and what they can do individually to reduce and maybe even stop it. I would come up with a water footprint that helps them come up with a basic idea of how – however how small or big- can impact water usage and wastage. In my action I will stop the usage of faucets that you cannot control the usage of water you intend to use, this will help in the reduction of water wastage. I will also come up with a recycling water method that is cost efficient and space efficient.

Hi Lisa, I like your suggestion for a watchdog - but how does this help address the power imbalance created by colonialism?

In Kenya specifically, what does it mean to be Indigenous, and what impact does this have on the country's governing processes and responses to climate change?

Thanks for taking note of that, but what i implied by adding a watch dog is to monitor the funds mentioned in SDG #13 because i think it is a has good action plans. This had nothing to do with power imbalance. But to answer your question to be indigenous in kenya means you have land that you own from your ancestors who founded the land which is an indication of power however not wealth. Indidenous people rarely participate in governing processes in Kenya, this is because they are a minority and people do not respect their rights. Indigenous people in kenya have been hugely affected by climate change therefore reducing the number of indigenous people, they however dont know about climate change because a huge number of them live in poverty and are not educated.

I love that we both thought of water related elements to incorporate in our targets. Great job.
