CILT Brazil Brasilia E6 Teacher: Denise Bomtempo - Ingrid Silva

Sep 26, 2017 by Ingrid Silva

First of all, after reading the Sustainable Development Goal 13 the topic that most kept my attention was the third one. By creating a monetary fund which was founded by developed nations to help others developing countries around the world, they are taking a big and important step, because usually people who live in some of these developing countries are subject to more suffering from the changes caused by global warming and pollution. One big example of this case is the situation of indigenous people who inhabit these countries, they are always the first ones to notice the changes in nature and a lot of times this interrupts their usual activities and lifestyle.

Despite these things, there is another important factor that changed the exit of the USA from the Paris Agreement. The USA as one of the most developed nations in the world and a very influential country has a huge importance in this cause. After the Second and the Cold wars, United States has turned a capitalist power and with this title came the great quantity of greenhouse gases emissions, the deforestation activities and the accelerated industrialization. These three things together contributed to the global warming and the situation that we are in now. By abandoning the agreement, the President is leaving implicit that it is not an US responsibility, which is not true.

Concerning the SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities, the monetary fund and the implanting of national and local disaster risk reduction strategies are the most effective actions that can help deal with this big problem. The fund can help with researches and ways for the water catchment and the strategies help with the reduction of harmful actions which helps to preserve the small amount of water still available.

I think that we should be taking into account the work as a group in general, because it won´t be effective if just one or two nations do the right thing and start acting ecologically correct, but if all the countries scattered in the world left some superficial things like ideological wars, disputes by territory and the elevation of capitalist economy, and start thinking and doing what is best for our planet then we could save it. If, in the future, the planet doesn´t exist anymore these "little" things will be irrelevant and we would have lost the best opportunity we had to save it.

If I had to build and action/target that addressed water, Indigenous peoples, and non-indigenous people, the first thing I would do was install a water rationing system in a balanced way around the world because if it is performed in the right way, it will be a great solution for the waste of water. Concerning the Indigenous and non-indigenous people, I would suggest that the first group taught us how to live symmetrically with nature and take of it just the things we need, and finally for us, the second group I would suggest that we took a little time per day to think if our actions are good for the environment, if the answer was negative, we should rethink our lifestyles.

Hello Silva,

You are right by point to the fact that developed countries have done a great job by agreeing to contribute towards financing developing countries as most developing countries are unable to easily sustain livelihoods in their countries, let alone help in the fight against global warming without any financial assistance. They need those funds.

Regarding the second question (How do SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities?), do you think factors like: availability of water; rising sea level; sea acidification; and melting ice will be impacted by the targets of SDG#13? How?

Your fourth paragraph highlight a strong point in connection to the second paragraph. Indeed, all countries should be involved in the fight against climate change. Countries like the US. must reconsider their decision and rejoin the fight. Climate change is real and we should all be involved in fighting it. It goes without saying that positive works of climate change conscious countries could be negated by countries that do not consider climate change as worthy of consideration. This is one reason why we should all get involved.

Great action points on elements to take to address the water challenges. Cognitive reflections is a good one because the moment we engage in water related thoughts/conversations, we are likely to use our resources more wisely. Likewise, rationing will be a good idea as it will help to use water judiciously. However, the latter might be too harsh on people. Instead, if we are able to engage people at the thoughts/conversation stages concerning water, I believe we will achieve significant results.

Hi Elliot,

Answering your question I think that the SDG#13´s targets although very good, they are more vague without a focus on a specific issue such as sea acidification, so I believe that some more specific goals that relate individually to each problem involving global changes should be developed.
