what is climate change, and how does it affect you?

The climate of a region or city is its weather averaged over many years. Thus climate change is defined by along-term change in the earth's climate, especially a change due to an increase in the average atmospheric temperature. Climate change in my opinion does not really affect me because I’ve not experienced any drastic natural disasters or seen the consequences; for example melting glaciers. People around the world have different perspectives on climate change, depending on whether they’ve been personally affected or the place they live in is. Least developing countries are most vulnerable to climate change. They are least able to recover from climate stresses and their economic growth is highly dependent on climate-sensitive sectors. Countries like Somalia, Kenya Ethiopia, and Sudan suffer from severe droughts and because of the lack of funding and the incapability of the country to provide for all of the people suffering, many die. While others like Fiji suffer from severe floods. People in richer countries are better off, this is because the can easily recover therefore when calamities hit it’s relatively not a big issue. Thereby climate change isn’t viewed as a serious problem. However richer countries also suffer from a lot of natural disasters from example in Texas recently the flooding caused the death of 16 people. When Nielsen-Gammon was asked whether he thinks climate change plays a role he said that the warmer temperatures in the atmosphere mean that the air can hold more moisture, making storms like these larger and more damaging.

Response to quote:

“Even though we are suffering disproportionately from climate change impacts, we contribute the least to global emissions; nevertheless we have been marginalized from participating in the development and implementation of policies, programs, plans and actions related to our local adaptation.”**

This perspective challenges my own because in my opinion we contribute the most to global emissions especially because of the unlimited economic growth of highly industrialized countries, which emit huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions which contribute a lot to climate change. For example in Kenya the amount of people who use cars and other means of public transport are many and they contribute a lot to global warming because of the gases emitted by the engines. Kenya’s flight system is also very international and as a result a lot of planes are entering and leaving the country, and this contributes highly as well,

What is my vision for a sustainable world?

My vision for a sustainable world is one where people either walk or use bikes for transport. A world where the use of fossil fuels is reduced and the use of renewable energy resources is more frequent by going solar; installing renewable heating and cooling systems as well as using green electricity. A place where people learn to save energy by using energy efficient lighting and appliances, as well as installing efficient windows, doors, and plug leaks and many other ways to save energy.

What am i planning to do to make this vision a reality?

I plan not take the environment around me for granted. As well as to stop wasting resources and use them in a responsible matter. I also plan on travelling less.

What impact has colonization had on our journey to a sustainable planet?

Both positive and negative impacts. This is because colonization has resulted into the development of many countries. As a result more resources started getting used, industrialization has been introduced which has resulted to large amounts of greenhouse gases being produced on a daily basis. More trees cut down thus deforestation which also contributes a lot to climate change. On the other hand technology has enhanced and they are more strategies to make the planet more sustainable and many ways to deal with climate change.

Hi Jana, I am Lebo, your Cop 23 Mentor. It is a pleasure to meet you.

I read your post with great interest, and have some things I would like you to unpack further.

Response to quote: who is the "we" referred to in the quote and is it the same as the "we" you talk about in your response? If not, how does this affect your response?

I like your proposals for a more sustainable future, but given the theme of colonization what are the barriers to achieving some of these things? What challenges do you think developing and low income countris face in advocating for and implementing greener processes?
