MY VIRTUAL PROFILE

Peace & Conflict   Jul 30, 2017 by TED APONDI

A) What is your vision for a sustainable world?

My vision would be a world whereby our actions speak louder than our words, many times over we see situations whereby we the people will post online ranting on very important issues but that is usually where the ball stops with the modern culture. We have become keyboard warriors instead of warriors of change and as such we only say what we think should be done and  not do what needs to be done. In this i envision a culture of accountability whereby we cater for our surroundings and invite new, faster and innovative thinking (young minds and leaders of tomorrow) and technology to improve efficiency industrially(clean energy and production), socially(better leaders for stable government and policy) and environmentally(green initiatives-farming and forestry). This would have a snowball effect in countering the effects of global warming, negotiating democracy and to a fuller extent moving towards curbing global conflict- as most of them arose from the battle for resources and political power.

B) What are you planning to do to make this vision a reality?

Currently i have set up an online project called humans of peace(together with friends) which in due time we hope that will be set up as an CBO or NGO - it is a project that is based on awareness on various issues ranging from political, environmental and social. It also seeks to advocate the motto of peace love and unity to all through appreciating diversity and acceptance, moreover it seeks to call onto to youth to do projects which sensitize them on the culture of #DoingSomethingForNothing and at large being a #Changemaker in society. This helps socially in building new young leaders who are committed to helping society and not just fuel greed when in power. It is an ambitious plan and is still in its early days but hopefully it help change society and the world at large.

C) What impact has colonization had on our journey to a sustainable planet?

Like i said before the hunger for power and resources has been a critical factor. Tensions between colonial masters were a huge contributing factor to the First world war and as such we saw resources used and lost all for the wrong reasons ( war). The ingredients of war and colonization were obviously exploitation and as such we see the exploitation of resources in countries like Haiti in the 1800s or AFRICA In the 1900s a huge reason for poverty and conflict due to the fact that the slave mentally remained engrained in the indigenous people, in effect showing how conflict resolution is harder to achieve in many 3rd world countries especially in Africa whereby all countries except ethiopia and liberia were colonized.

Hi Ted, great to read your blog. I am Lebo, your Cop 23 mentor. I like some of the points you raise but would like to see you make a clearer connection between conflict and global warming. For example, what is the impact of war on the environment? How are people affected by war that might lead to global warming?

You mention that war and colonization were about exploitation - in what ways were places like Africa and Haiti exploited and what impact has that had on the environment or how people care for the environment?

Thanks for your post!

Can you please ensure you list your country name in your blog post so that other students and mentors know where you're coming from?

Thanks,

Carrie

I really liked your point about people nowadays saying a lot online, but not doing much to change things. It made me think about how we can avoid doing that in this project.
