Adapting Water use to Climate Change - Aaron Wilde

Oct 23, 2016 by Aaron Wilde

Water is the most important resource on Earth. On earth 96.5% of water is unusable. With climate change, higher average temperatures and changes in precipitation and temperature extremes are projected to affect the availability of water resources through changes in rainfall distribution, soil moisture, glacier and ice melt, and river and groundwater flows. These factors are expected to lead to further deterioration of water quality as well in the future. In Canada we take for granted the clean drinkable water that runs from our tap. While in most countries drinkable water is a problem.

Our assigned BlueYouth theme is adapting water use to climate change. In Canada this issue is not very relevant to most people living here. The reason this is not an issue is because Canada has 20% of the world's freshwater supply. With 20% of the world's freshwater supply we have easy accessible clean drinking water, while in most countries this is a very large issue.

In Canada the government and even the people with power do not show interest in this subject. Their is no acting at all by the government to do anything about this crisis. We have make a difference by showing people the damage water shortages and climate change causes. Our country has an abundant supply of water right now, but in 50-100 years we may not. Since our country is doing well right now people do not know what it is like to run out of water.

The only real strategy to deal with climate change and the shortage of water in this world is to inform people about this issue. A great way to do this would be through the news or even social media so that it can reach many millions of people. This would convince many people that are stubborn about climate change not existing to believe it is really happening.
