Cassuruba Reserve in Caravelas, Bahia, Brazil

Since 2003 environmental and research groups have been warning about the consequences of oil and natural gas exploration on the biodiversity conservation area of the Abrolhos Marine National Park. The SOS Abrolhos Coalition was funded in order to bring together several NGOs, environmental networks, social movements and research groups.

A practice of agriculture and fishing in the area, affects the environmental structure of the place since it has used the extraction of part of the vegetation so that the practice has continuity, besides some pollution that will happen in the water. These factors can build up for long-term climate change. These farmers and fishermen are the ones who profit in the short term, but are included in the large group of the population in which this modification in the environment can cause climatically speaking.

The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) is a municipality under a special regime. is linked to the Ministry of the Environment and integrates the National Environmental System (Sisnama). The Institute is responsible for executing the actions of the National System of Conservation Units, which may propose, implement, manage, protect, supervise and execute programs of research, protection , preservation and conservation of biodiversity and exercise the power of environmental police for the protection of federal Conservation Units. This institute protects the mangroves of Cassurubá, and provides shelter and breeding and growth area to various marine species, both coral reefs and shallow marine environments closer to the coast. Mangroves rely on coral reef life, shrimp fishing and coastal fish, collecting crab, sururst oyster and thousands of people using these natural resources for their survival and ensuring sustainable management of the natural resources of mangroves, rivers , estuaries and the shallow marine area of Cassurubá Island and its surroundings.
