Costa Rica - Deliberative Process

Oct 18, 2017 by Juan Carbone

The similarities between the case of Canada; Tar Sands with ours (Crucitas) are:

  • Both affect the communities of the area by indirect chemical poisoning
  • Both pollute the area in which the events are taking place

The differences are:

  • The Costa Rican government is trying to stop this illegal gold extraction while in Canada the government encourages to expand the affected area
  • In Canada local indigenous people are affected now and possibly more in the future. In Costa Rica the area of Crucitas has no indigenous people
  • In Canada the government is having a profit of the gains the Tar Sands produce, while in Costa Rica the only ones that profit are the ilegal miners
  • In Costa Rica this ore extraction is completely ilegal while in Canada the Tar Sands are legal

What may have missed from our analysis is that maybe the sources could have been more recent. We also lacked to explain on the various endangered species affected in the area.

Right Juan, the activities of companies that deal on natural resources affect the environment the world over, thankfully, technological advancements is helping create more energy efficient practices that would  lead to decreased negative environmental impact. Government regulations are also in place to check these activities. However, there are still opportunities for these companies to do more in terms of environmental sustainability. You are absolutely right, climate change is altering the pattern of life on our planet, causing widespread species extinction and migration.

Well done Juan, you definitely have a strong sense of the issues being explored.
