- How is this representation of climate change similar to the other things you’ve read/viewed? How is different?
The video represents climate change similarly to many articles I've read. Climate change is shown to be a problem that affects us all in one way or the other. The video also talks about how even though the one of the main contributors to climate change may be industrialised countries emmiting excess carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, it has a major impact, if not the biggest impact on the indigenous people. They are shown to be the most vulnerable to changes in the climate, as they rely on the natural environment to a large extent on a daily basis. In addition, similarly to an article I read about The Anchorage Declaration - Indigenous People's Global Summit on Climate Change, the video tell us about the fact that indigenous people have the right to have an audible voice in decision making, when it comes to any and all matters of the environment involving climate change.
- Where do you see the influence of indigenous peoples in this video? Where is it missing?
In the video, indigenous people are shown to influence the environment in a number of ways. Firstly, the environment around them is not only their home, its a part of their identity. It's their source of essentials such as food and water, and it is most likely has a huge part to play with their livelihood, as most of them would have livelihoods such as farming and fishing, which, in the long run, will be affected by climate change. For example, with food, farming may be a seasonal activity, but with the effects of climate change, the climate pattern would be disrupted, which would jeopardize the farming pattern if the indigenous people. Therefore, as such, the rights of the indigenous people has been acknowledged in the REDD+ agreement, and as it should be, they have a voice in the matters of the natural environment
- What solutions to climate change does this video propose?
The main solution the video proposes to combat climate change is the implementation of the REDD+ agreement. This agreement proposes thay the government takes suitable actions to ensure thay carbon dioxide emissions from factories and industrialized areas are minimized, as these are the main sources of the excess carbon dioxide fueling the greenhouse effect. In addition, it proposes thay they take actions to lower the rate of forest destruction or even abolish it altogether.
- Do you agree with the representation of Indigenous peoples and climate change action in the video? Why or why not?
I agree with the representation of indigenous people in the video, because I believe since they rely on their environment to a larger extent, larger than most people, they should have alot of influence over it, and how it is treated. I agree fully with the implementation of the REDD+ agreement, however, the source of the payments to ensure that rate of forest destruction is minimalized was not specified in the video, and also, it must be ensured that the REDD+ department in the country must be run by individuals who have the mindset of solely improving conditions regarding climate cha he, whilst working with indigenous people.
- What are the opportunities and challenges in taking seriously Indigenous perspectives of climate change? Consider factors that facilitate or hinder ethical responses to climate change, including social and economic inequities, political dynamics, marginalization, discrimination, state, military/police power, etc.
It is outstanding that, through the REDD+ agreement, the perspectives and opinions of indigenous people are taking seriously. However, they could be coaxed one way or the other by big companies to make decisions which may lead to undesirable consequences they may not be aware of at that moment
