United States: 2b. Indigenous responses to climate change

Sep 28, 2017 by jennifercruden

How is this representation of climate change similar to the other things you've read/viewed? How is it different?

This representation of climate change is similar to other things I've read/viewed in the way how it talks about the causes and effects of climate change and some ways to help stop climate change. This video talked a lot about carbon which is a large factor in causing climate change. It also talked about how cutting down trees is one of the biggest causes of climate change because it releases so much carbon dioxide. As for the effects of climate change, this video like many other sources talked about how climate change can be very bad for people around the globe and how it can destroy different lifestyles and change the agriculture, resources, and economy of many cities, countries, and even continents. This video talked a lot about REDD+ which holds some suggestions of solutions to stopping climate change. One example of how it is different from other things I've read/viewed is that it was made in the perspective of Indigenous people. I thought the video was made to focus a lot on Indigenous people and how they are related to climate change. This is different than some of the other representations of climate change that I've seen/heard/read. All in all, this video that talked about climate change was very similar to other things I've read/viewed but was also pretty different.

Where do you see the influence of Indigenous people in this video? Where is it missing?

I believe that the influence of Indigenous people is appearing throughout the whole video and is not missing in any parts. This whole video is formatted to where Indigenous people are all discussing what climate change is and the different aspects to it. This is why I believe that pretty much the whole video is influenced by Indigenous people and why the influence of Indigenous people in this video is not missing.

What solutions to climate change does this video propose?

This video proposes many solutions to climate change. Most of them are tied into REDD+, which is an organization that tries to prevent and solve climate change issues. REDD+ gives Indigenous people rights and lets them have a say in climate-related issues through FPIC. It also provides developing countries with money from developed countries to solve money issues that arise when trying to stop climate change. Another thing it does is that it tries to keep deforestation and forest degradation at a minimum so that less CO2 is emitted. All in all, REDD+ does many things to help solve the issue of climate change and is one thing that the video mentions that provides solutions to climate change.

Do you agree with the representation of Indigenous peoples and climate change action in the video? Why or why not?

I agree with the representation of Indigenous people and climate change action in the video. The video is about a group of Indigenous people all gathered around to learn about climate change from the elder who seems to be leading this video. They talk about the causes and effects of climate change and how we can help stop it. They also make sure to mention how Indigenous people are related to climate change. What I'm trying to say is that they cover the main points of climate change and Indigenous people which causes me to agree with the representation of Indigenous people and climate change action in the video.

What are the opportunities and challenges in taking seriously Indigenous perspectives of climate change? Consider factors that facilitate or hinder ethical responses to climate change, including social and economic inequities, political dynamics, marginalization, discrimination, state, military/police power, etc.

An opportunity in taking seriously Indigenous perspectives that we can gain is that both Indigenous and non-indigenous people could live in harmony without the government or companies stealing the land of Indigenous people. A challenge that could be raise by this is that unfortunately, some places, people, and companies rely on resources from Indigenous people's land and would be very opposed to this idea. Another opportunity to be gained if we were to take seriously Indigenous perspectives is that we could stop cutting down trees. A challenge that would be raised by this is that it would be very difficult and costly to get big companies that rely on this industry to stop and to get everybody eager to switch. All in all, many opportunities await in taking seriously Indigenous perspectives of climate change, but many of these opportunities have challenges that may be difficult to overcome.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for your post! My name is Summer and I'm one of your mentors for this project.

I was interested in your statement that "A challenge that would be raised by this is that it would be very difficult and costly to get big companies that rely on this industry to stop and to get everybody eager to switch". How do you think we could get everybody eager to switch from cutting down a lot of trees? What approaches do you think a group of people might take in reaching out to companies to try to change their minds?
