Philippines: Interactive Simulations

Environment   Sep 28, 2017 by Kathleen Grace E. Tulabing

How do these simulations relate to your community? Do any of them feel irrelevant to your context?

  • Yes, I think what I got in the global calculator is relevant to me and to my family. I've seen a lot of changes in the climate while growing up. What I got is 4.9 so I need 4 and have planets to live, I've been experiencing so many trials in life that is connected with the global warming. The climate change is the number one problem in the Philippines. But people are not aware of this. It somehow relates to us especially on what is currently happening in the Philippines. It’s so sad to hear the news everywhere saying that people are dying because of the floods, and parents that are traumatized because of what happened. The Philippines is one of the tropical countries that are very prone to floods and calamities. Unlike before, it’s not that very serious. Rains and floods are experienced thrice of 2 months but now it’s not what happens, it became more serious even one single low depression typhoon can kill hundreds of people’s lives in one day, because of the drainage of the city or the urban community. We are not aware of these things because we tend to not care.

How do these simulations help you (or not help you) find your place in combatting climate change?

  • It helped me a lot because of so many things that are happening in this world, especially in our own countries. We found the problems very difficult because we don't know how to accept and understand what's happening. Because of the result, I am now very much aware of my surroundings, on what I eat and do. And although I can't change the fact that everything is changing especially the state of my community and also the country's issues.

Have these simulations changed how you think climate change should be tackled?

  • Everything in our country should be tackled and talk about because the issues are not yet done. And problems always occur in every challenge that the country faced. For me, the fact that you’re aware of what is happening is very important. Like in my country, the poor people still not the best of what they really need and yet the crisis still goes on every year passes. Every day we face crisis especially in my experience every time I go to school I realized that there are so many changes, especially in the atmosphere, the steam or moist of the land in urban areas. The air that we breathe is different from what we experienced while growing up. Also, the news where the products and food are contaminated. The crisis in water, traffic and the weather. It’s so hard to act when the government doesn’t know how to solve it. It’s very difficult for us because we are the audience and the main people here and we’re only following what is the government’s policy and premises in the country.
