America - Sarah - Indigenous people and the environment

Environment   Sep 27, 2017 by sarahsu

How is this representation of climate change similar to the other things you’ve read/viewed? How is different?

This representation of climate change is similar to the other things I’ve viewed because it talks about how carbon dioxide traps heat in the atmosphere, which I also have heard of from the movie an inconvenient truth. However, this representation of climate change is different than the other things I have viewed because it talks about the REDD+ organization, which I have not heard about before.

Where do you see the influence of Indigenous peoples in this video? Where is it missing?

I see the influence of indigenous people in this video when the elder talks about REDD+. He says that the indigenous people are very much connected to REDD+, and REDD+ makes sure their voices get heard before making a decision. The influence of indigenous people is missing in this video when the elder talks about companies. This is because the companies don’t listen to the indigenous people because they already have so much power, the indigenous people couldn’t stop them. However, the REDD+ gives the indigenous people more power, which would make the companies listen to them.

What solutions to climate change does this video propose?

This video proposes several solutions to climate change. The first one was to stop cutting down trees because trees take in carbon dioxide (which we currently have an excessive amount of) and let out oxygen. But when trees are cut down, not only do we have less trees to take in carbon dioxide, the rotting wood actually lets out carbon dioxide which is why we should preserve forests. Another solution the video is to make agreements with industrialized countries to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they are emitting.

Do you agree with the representation of Indigenous peoples and climate change action in the video? Why or why not?

I agree with the representation of indigenous people and climate change action in this video because it shows how little power the indigenous people had before, but now they got more power with the REDD+, so they can help prevent climate change. The reason the indigenous people very badly want to prevent climate change is because climate change would kill the environment, and the indigenous people’s life is based on the environment.

What are the opportunities and challenges in taking seriously Indigenous perspectives of climate change? Consider factors that facilitate or hinder ethical responses to climate change, including social and economic inequities, political dynamics, marginalization, discrimination, state, military/police power, etc.

The opportunities and challenges in taking indigenous perspectives of climate change is that they could help us really reduce climate change. However, a challenge is that these ideas would cost a lot of money to put into position. For example, one of their ideas is to stop deforestation, but it would cost a lot of money and effort to stop many large companies around the world to stop cutting down trees. Also, many people may not want to take in indigenous perspectives because indigenous people don’t interact with society much, so some people may regard them with low power.

Hi Sarah, thanks for your post. My name is Summer and I'm one of your mentors for this project. I was interested in your statement that "indigenous people don’t interact with society much". Do you know any indigenous people who live where you do? Do you think the perspectives of indigenous people who live in cities are different than those who do not live in cities?
