Morocco: 1b. Ecological and water footprint

Sep 26, 2017 by Anaïs Amri

For this task, we have been asked to calculate our ecological and water footprint based on our lifestyle. The least I could say is that it truly surprised me to learn we would need approximately 2.4 earths if everyone lived like me. And it shows my carbon footprint is equivalent to 5.5 tonnes of CO2 emission per year, 47% of my total ecological footprint. It is very shocking for me to realize I'm harming our planet thinking I was doing the complete opposite.

This is some kind of motivation to make more efforts in the future and change my daily habits such as reducing electrical use, consuming more locally grown food and unpackaged or unprocessed food. As for the water issue the world is facing, I don't think I can make any change as I am already trying to use the minimum water possible. This task really helped me find my place in combatting climate change.

Hi Anais,

It can be really difficult to reflect on our own role in climate change. I appreciate your self-reflection. Tools like these are meant to make us aware of our own patterns in relation to others and how unsustainable these habits are. Sometimes it can seem impossible to change our lives enough to make significant change. However, we need to realize that fighting climate change does not just fall on the individual who has limited power to change some of the biggest detriments to the environment. If you cannot imagine changing your own relationship to water consumption, can you imagine challenging water waste in industry, in situations of excess ie. water lawns.

While it is necessary to challenge our own habits we must not forget that we cannot save the planet alone -- while governments would like to off-load the responsibility onto individual citizens we must find ways of holding those structures accountable.
