United States: 1c. Colonial Context

Environment   Sep 25, 2017 by haydenboone
  • How does your footprint reflect your country's economy, including its colonial relations?
  • My footprint reflects my country's economy as having a lot of wealth, which is very true. My country is non-comunous, so there are a lot of opportunities to get a good job, get paid well, and be successful. Because of this, it's considered normal and okay to drive a car every day to work and also take a plane for commuting purposes, or for vacation, very often. I am kind of like this. half of the time I take a car to school and back every day and my parents take their car to and from work every day too. The same goes for most of the people at my school. My country's average carbon footprint is about 20 metric tons and my average carbon footprint is about 13 metric tons, which is great compared to my country's average, but still really concerning, especially considering the world average is only about 4 metric tons.

All of the money people make here pays for a large house with a good amount of luxury, as well as food, including lots of meat. An immense majority of the people in the U.S. eat meat on a daily basis, myself include, and this is not eco-friendly. We also use a lot of technology and electricity here, and a lot of us don't know how to conserve energy.

This is also true about times like the California gold rush, where miners didn't care about the fact that all of their mining was destroying the environment, clogging up lakes and river beds, and tearing up the ground. Also, when cars were invented, and people just weren't aware that using cars would someday cause global warming.
  • How are the effects of climate change related with power imbalances among countries or within countries?

The effects of climate change are related with power imbalances because a big, powerful country that has a lot of wealth and a thriving economy tends to produce more carbon emmisions because more people work, therefore a lot of people have cars and possess a need to travel. Also, the developement of nuclear weapons like some countries today, add to climate change.
