Philippines: 1c. Pre-Conference - Colonial Context

Environment   Sep 24, 2017 by Ranela Maye Pacquing

Thinking back to your carbon footprint, consider how the footprint, power imbalances, and the effects of climate change are connected. How does your footprint reflect the economy of your country, including its colonial relations?

My footprint was enough proof that I was consuming too much than an average person should. What more the people around me who are unaware of their actions towards the environment? My footprint reflects the economy of my country, specifically where I reside in, because we consume too much than necessary. Because of overuse of natural resources, it does not only affect the people living in the city but also indigenous people who can’t do anything about it. Everything we do has an effect on the environment which leads to climate change.

How are the effects of climate change related with power imbalances among countries or within countries?

Climate change could be a result to power imbalances. In the Philippines, the higher the position, the more corrupt. People with higher power are more likely to dismiss and ignore the events that are happening. They are insensitive towards the indigenous people and people living in the developing areas.

I think the smaller and weaker the country, the more they experience climate change and again, the people in the developing countries are the ones who have to suffer.
