Ghana:My idea of a sustainable world

Environment   Sep 22, 2017 by Marie-Therese Mensah

What is your vision of a sustainable world?

My vision of a sustainable world is a world where we all recognised that we are in this together and that each and everyone's decision affects people who may not even be in their immediate  surroundings. A sustainable world would need one where we are able to efficiently use our resources without hindering future generations from having the same right. In a sustainable world afforestation, recycling and use of eco friendly methods of living would be the norm.In a sustainable world we would coexist and be very international minded people .we would respect and tolerate the views of others regardless of whether or not they contradict ours.

What am I planning to do to make this vision a reality?

Firstly, I strongly believe in the notion that one person can make a difference. I believe that spear heading causes that create local awareness about the need to create a sustainable world would be a major step in realising this vision. Also using organization's such as the NCCE (national commission for civic education) in Ghana and also using the local community service groups in my school will aid in battling the vast ignorance of people on this particular topic as well giving a voice to people who share the same vision. Also i would use social media as a platform to preach the message of open-mindedness and respect for fellow man regardless of their ethnic background.

What impact has colonization had on our journey to a sustainable world?

The role that colonisation has played in delaying the creation of a sustainable world cannot be overlooked. Many  formerly colonised countries have become too dependant on colonial masters that the lack the ability to efficiently plan the countries activities ahead while still keeping in mind the most eco friendly ways to achieve these activities. Also the people in these countries have become too used to a certain type of lifestyle that now inhibits them from fully embracing more environment friendly ways of living.

Yes Mary, it is true that our actions can have a big impact on other's lives, and this reminds me of the concept of the butterfly effect: the flapping of the wings of a butterfly can influence a distant tornado. In the same logic, an inconcious act of neglect, a selfish overconsumption, may influence hunger and dehydration in another country
