Morocco: My profile

Sep 20, 2017 by Meriem Bennani

Hello people!

I'm very happy to finally join and start sharing my perspectives. I'd like to start my blog with this picture that captures well my vision on climate change and today's ecological situation. We are living in a very fragil ecological balance, the planet's future is between our hands, if we act soon and direct our steps towards a green healthy world, we'll bring earth back to normal, but if we continue harming the environment, we'll destruct ourselves and our planet.

So to answer the activity's questions, i can say that colonisation has for sure left it's footprint in the ecological system. In africa and india especially it has started massive exploitation of forests and resources along with the human exploitation. But this belongs to the past, today we have started a new journey to achieve sustainable development wich is, in my opinion, centered aroud economic growth, human development and enviromental protection, as these three are necessary to earth's and humanity's well being. Sustainable development is about the big picture, it's about enabling equity by fighting illetracy, poverty, discrimination, injustices and the list goes on. It's also about directing our efforts towards enviorment-friendly industry, replacing fossil energies with green energies and innovating without hurting our planet. And most importantly repair the damage we caused on earth and start living in harmony with our environment.

This for me, can only be achieved if we collaborate truly, all of us, communicate, discuss and work together for the planet's future, our future. I previously said sustainable devemopment is about the big picture but in fact it's also about the details, i'm ready to act individually to contribute to the change, by recycling to reduce the amount of garbage, using public transport to minimize gas emissions, shopping from enviroment-friendly brands...and i'm also thinking about joining a NGO to participate more actively in remaking the world. Remember, it's the little things combined togheter that make big things happen.

Hi Meriem,

I really enjoyed reading your thoughtful post! You pack a lot of important information into your first paragraph in which you address the impacts of colonization on the environment. When you state that "this belongs to the past" what do you mean? That colonization belongs to the past? I would encourage you to look at the way colonization and its legacies continue to impact the environment and the people who depend on it. Through archaic legal agreements, continued land dispossession, inadequate funding etc. Colonialism still runs through state relationships with indigenous peoples around the world. It is important to remember the historical and current harm caused by colonial mechanisms to move forward.

I appreciate your passion and you are very right, sustainable development happens on many levels. I would encourage you to see what organizations you could learn more about and potentially get involved with!

Thank you for taking time to read my blog Kendra!

And just made some reasearch about current colonialism, your words are true. When i said colonialism belongs to the past, i was talking about my country, Morocco is no longer officially colonized ( exept for sebta and mliliya) but it still suffers from it and in many fields, but do we have the possibility to get rid of it? I believe so.

As for the organisations i really want to get involved in something but i'm still runing my research. In the meantime, i discovered a research engine that uses 80% of it's ad revenue to plant trees, so everytime you search for something you help plant a tree and you can even keep track of how much trees you plant! This reasercher is called ECOSIA and it works just like google, i'm loving it.
