Environment   Sep 13, 2017 by Ingrid Aimê Freire Rodrigues

According to my ecological footprint graphic, if everyone lived like me we’d need 1,1 planets to support the global consumption. But including others species this number rises for 2,1 planets.

But some parts are possible to reduce, like the sources where you buy your electricity (you can pass to use a renewable source), or if you don’t save energy you will start saving it,

If you costume to drive a can, you can change this and once a week, go for the places walking, or by bus in case of far places.

You also can produce a smaller amount of waste or try to recycle it.

You can eat more fresh food too. Several of these tips, besides benefiting the environment, can do well for your health too.

Some things are not very possible to reduce, like the place where you live, or maybe how many people live with you (is more difficult to change it).

Reducing individual footprints, I believe is only a start. You must try to reduce, of course, but, also there are other areas what need to reduce too. For example, talking about waste of water, the sector that spends the most amounts is the agriculture. According to the researches, 70% of all water in the word is used for irrigation.

Changes must adopted not for one, but for a million times one.

Hi Ingrid,

You have made some important observations based on your ecological footprint. I wonder, which of the changes that you listed will you take action on yourself? I agree with you that reducing is very important. For example, recycling is critical for our waste management now, but it would be even better if there was less waste, to begin with. There are a variety of campaigns that promote changing behaviours for one day a week or other shorter time periods to get people started and thinking about a change. It might be interesting for you to choose one area that is important to you and look for other people trying to make changes with that also. Do you have any initial thoughts about what we could do to change or improve the water use for agriculture?

Keep thinking about these important concepts.

Allison

Hey Allison,

After calculating my ecological footprint, I thought about what I can change here, in my routine, with the intention of having a more ecologically correct life. And I saw that have many ideas to put into practice. For example: trying to suggest a awareness project to school, and after, expanding it to all the school comunity. Or to use the internet, because it is a very good resource.

It is the area where I want to work now, because is a simple start that I can do.

About the water used in agriculture, a government attitude is essential, so, the wiser to do would be charge them this attitude.
