Canada 1a. Pre-Conference - Creating a Profile in the Virtual Classroom

  • A) What is your vision for a sustainable world?

My vision for a sustainable world is a world where there is no need to fight for resources while not making climate change caused by global warming worse in the process. Each country could use renewable energy sources such as solar power, geothermal, and hydropower to power their lives. In my ideal world, all the vehicles would be powered by electricity and not fossil fuels like gas or propane. For this to actually benefit the planet, however, we need enough electricity generated by the renewable energy resources so we wouldn't need to get electricity generated from coal. In my vision for the earth sustainable also means that we had no more war's as sometimes these war's get in the way of the earth from being sustainable as wars use tons of resources.

  • B) What are you planning to do to make this vision a reality?

To make this vision a reality I will start small. I am currently in Innovate which is an environmental stewardship program/ club at my school. So far we have gotten our school to install solar panels on our roofs and we currently have more projects on the way including Urban bee keeping, indoor gardening, Creating objects with 3D printers using bioplastics and spreading awareness of environmentally friendly choices people can make in their everyday life. Outside of school. I try to convince my parents to also help out the environment by recycling and turning off the lights or electronics when they are not in use.

C) What impact has colonization had on our journey to a sustainable planet?

Colonization has had a negative impact on our journey to a sustainable planet because it can be argued that colonization and globalization have made our planet less sustainable by their use of the earth's resources. Industrialization which is a factor created by colonization and globalization have also added more pollutants to the earth's atmosphere.

Hi Andrew,

Great start, and I truly commend you for what you're doing at your school, so keep it up! When you talk about the wars and how that exacerbates the idea of climate change, what policies (if you were a UN official) do you have in mind that could ameliorate that? Like Sandra said, what are the positive elements of colonization and industrialization? What do you think green industries should do (and what steps should they take) to reduce the emissions and social impacts to the vulnerable (e.g. indigenous peoples)? As I can see, the community you're from is quite eco-friendly, but for those that aren't: what are possible incentives, campaigns, or ways to engage the disengaged, and how would you do so?

A good article about moving to green energy can be found here: https://qz.com/988271/donald-trumps-coal-promise-us-coal-fired-plants-forced-to-announce-closures-in-2017-alone-could-power-all-of-qatar/

Congrats on a great submission, and keep empowering others to be eco-friendly like you :)

Great Andrew! But do you have an idea how much renewable resources that would be and how we can successfully generate it without any negative effect to the environment?

Great sustainable way of living, I must commend. Please keep it up, it’s great to have youths at the fore front of the climate change challenge. Any strategy on how you to convince your parents and even your neighbours to live more sustainably?

Have you also considered the positive sides of colonization? we can leverage on that and better our environment. Let hear your thoughts.

Way to go Andrew.... keep being environment friendly
