Costa Rica- Interactive Simulations

Environment   Sep 4, 2017 by Lucia Torres Bustamante
  • How do these simulations relate to your community? Do any of them feel irrelevant to your context?

In the simulator "Ecological Footprint" there were things that didn't quite resemble the reality of my country. For example, when the simulator asked for the type of house I live in, I noticed that none of the possible answers were accurate considering my reality. Just like when it asked if I used an electric car, at least in my country the use of this type of car is not very common. I don't think this is irrelevant, now more than ever I think that people should care to do this type of thing, to see what is what they do that damages more this planet. This way there is a more personal way to combat climate change.

  • How do these simulations help you (or not help you) find your place in combatting climate change?

It's very interesting how with the "Ecological Footprint" simulator I found out that the biggest part of my life that contributes with climate change is the food that I eat. With this information I can now do something. Before playing with this simulator I didn't know that this could be such a great part in combating climate change and obviously I didn't do a thing about it because I didn't know. Now I can do things like buy more products that are locally grown and maybe make the effort to stop eating animal-based products or at least try to eat less of them.

  • Have these simulations changed how you think climate change should be tackled?

This has really changed the way I think, mitigating climate change is not only about recycling, reusing and reducing, this is important of course but now I realize that if everyone knew what they do the most that damages the planet it would be easier for them to start their own battle against pollution. With this simulator someone can realize that the way they contaminate the most is for example, transport. Knowing this they can do the effort to start carpooling or to use more public transport.

I dare everyone that reads this blog to take the "Ecological Footprint" simulator again and find what is the form of contamination that you do the most and find some way to reduce it. Comment below what was your highest polluting action and what did you do to tackled this.

Great Lucia, good to see that despite the fact that the simulation parameters did not exactly relate to your place, you still see how it links to our common planet. It will be great to see ways you personally want to be involved in combatting climate change.

Indeed the 3Rs are the foundation in the fight to climate change, we can still do more.

I took up your challenge....:) my highest form of contamination is transportation.

Waiting to see yours and your plan to reduce your Ecological Footprint both personally and community wise and the improved result if you've already started....:)

Way to go Lucia, we can do this together.... We can save our planet!

Thank you so much Sandra, I'm glad you took up my challenge. I really think that if everyone does this it will bring a really big benefit to this planet.
