#Decarbonize : Decolonize Project 2017-18

Interactive Simulation

1. Ecological Footprint Calculator -Link

  1. What part of your ecological footprint most surprised you?

The part of my ecological footprint that most surprised because if everyone lived like me, the world would need 5.9 Earths. That shows that even a very economically-minded person like me needs to improve on being more thoughtful on using energy more efficiently.

  1. How did your footprint compare to your city’s average and your country’s average?

My country’s average is approximately 4 Earth’s used compared to me using ~5.9 Earths. Obviously, I am on the more uneconomical side of the country and I should decrease my ecological footprint.

  1. What parts of your footprint do you feel is possible to reduce? What parts don’t?

I feel that the electricity portion is possible to reduce because solar panels would be an option so that I do not utilize an unnecessary amount of electricity. Our civilizations should be appreciative of the gift of our closeness to the sun because it provides cost-free electricity for a lifetime. A part of my footprint that I cannot reduce is the amount of time that my parents drive because I do not have a driver’s license meaning I cannot reduce the amount of gasoline I burn.

2. Climate Challenge - Link

  1. What strategy did you take in Climate Challenge? Was it effective in reducing emissions?

The strategy I took in Climate Change was trying to have a balance in reducing carbon emissions, increase the prosperity of the government, and be popular by the people. It was effective in reducing emissions because my final results stated that Europe emitted a very low level of carbon dioxide. However, my decisions were not very popular amongst the people resulting in me being voted out of office.

  1. What did you think of how the strategy cards represented resources? Do you think some of the strategies/policies would have different impacts than the ones shown in the game?

I think that the strategy cards represented fair sources because they had a balance in all categories. Yes, because there are more variables involved in the climate change discussions besides the decisions made by the president.

  1. How did you approach international negotiations? Was it better to lead by example, or attempt to encourage other nations by investing in their green economies?

I approached international negotiations by trying to compromise with all of their ideas so that they would have a greater chance of agreeing with me. Also, in my opinion, it is better to encourage other nations by investing in their green economies because that promotes decarbonization.
