My view on Climate change - Daniel Wilson activity 1a

Environment   Aug 9, 2017 by Daniel Wilson - Pimlico

I choose this image because this shows how life on earth will be if it continues to warm without us doing anything for it. Every land barren and void of life if we continue to ignore our current resolve. This is nothing compared to what others are currently experiencing over on the pacific islands, but this might be their future homes if we do nothing to stop this.

This is the current state of the low lying islands after a king tide.

What is your vision for a sustainable world?

The impacts of clearing land in Australia really surprised me when I actually looked into it further. The land clearing required to keep up with demand for meat or fresh produce in stores clears large areas of land, up to 5000km2 per year for all land applications; often clearing forests or regrowth in certain areas. In addition to this, land clearing for housing in Australia also impacts on farmland already allocated previously and is often replaced since many people in Australia prefer to have back yards or space. This is, in my opinion, not sustainable in Australia. In essence, I believe that land clearing in Australia should be more managed, as it often has other impacts such as raising soil salinity or making the ground unusable for farming or other purposes for many years. Furthermore, if this doesn’t happen, Australia will face food shortages in the near future, if the removal of farmland continues to be replaced by houses.

What are you planning to do to make this vision a reality?

This project will highlight ways of better managing our environment as well as improvise ways to help those affected. I’m here to gather relevant information about those affected and find out how much others know about climate change. I can also provide information to those who are unaware of the true impacts that climate change has. Knowledge about climate change can affect how we deal with it, and we will be more effective working towards minimising our impact on climate change. Moreover, looking for more ways to be sustainable will help minimise the impact we already have on the environment and will lead to a cleaner future.

What impact has colonisation had on our journey to a sustainable planet?

Colonisation has impacted greatly on the amount of resources consumed. Now that we are more aware of our current situation, we are finding more efficient ways of doing the same task with more output or less input to get a better result. We are also looking into other methods of providing cleaner energy, that doesn’t impact our environment. However, colonisation has had its impact, as many countries are working are working on solutions to various problems that often distract us from the real issue in the near future. Every country has its own problems, and the more we ignore them and focus on climate change alone, the more tunnel-visioned we become and issues inside the country arise. Food shortages, lack of water, poor economies can ruin a country trying to develop into the modern world. Essentially, colonisation is still a barrier in our world; even the vast distances between countries can affect how we help one another.

Hi Daniel,

I really enjoyed reading your thoughtful response. I would love you see you expand your conversation around Colonization. When you say "it has impacted greatly on the amount of resources consumed" what do you mean? How did colonization do this?

I would encourage you to be more specific about the points you are making. What is the "real issue"? You are very right that countries experience "there own problems", many of which are related to colonization and climate change, and that focusing on global climate change initiatives are not enough. What do you think can be done then to address global concerns around climate change while also address problems within individual communities?

That second image is after a king tide?

I don't even want to think about how big even a low tide would be...
