Sea level rising in Croatia

Environment   Oct 13, 2016 by Doris Anic

Croatia is known for it's big water supply but we are not aware of it well, we will never know what we have until we lose it. We live in country that depends on sea(water in general) because it plays a high role in our tourism and Mediterranean-type agriculture. The coastal zone is mainly karstic and steep, with only one large alluvial plain, and contains approximately one-quarter of the total Croatian population.

We all come face to face with problems, it could be a serious one or maby not but in this case it could grow in a much bigger and serious problem and that's sea level rising. If we pay attention enough to it we could change something but it is how it is at the moment. Every year our sea level grows little by little but we won’t notice the change until the day when disaster happenes. For example if the sea level starts going up fast some islands we know today will be erased forever, coastal areas could get flooded and by that I mean people moving, homes destroyed and all the memories with it.

Sea level rising is not a new thing to humanity because water has been going up since the humanity has come to this earth, but the problem is that in these past years it's going up fast and we have to slow it down somehow.

For Croatia, scenarios of sea-level by 2030, 2050, and 2100 are to rise about +18 ±12 cm, +38 ±14 cm, and +65 ±35 cm. Global sea level is expected to rise between 9 and 88 cm by 2100 – though large-scale melting of ice in the Antarctic or in Greenland could mean that sea level would rise much higher. Particularly vulnerable areas to sea-level rise are the Neretva Delta, the Krka River, Vrana Lake near Biograd, the island of Krapanj. Plus the marine eco-system could get affcted and that's bad for the whole country.

To conclude this topic is that the sea level will grow even faster if we dont't act fast. We can't stop it, but we can slow it down for sure if we all work together, because this is our planet and we have a big responsibility for taking care of it.
