In search of the Lost Future

Oct 7, 2016 by Wynona Andrea Yu Ocampo

Earth rotates. We all know this, but the question is, what’s the importance of this simple motion to us human beings now? We seem to take everything we have for granted. Our Mother Earth is the most beautiful planet in our solar system. Before, The relationship between man and earth was indescribable. However, humans developed cities and industries, the modern lifestyle changed primarily everything. We’ve been using and misusing lots of natural resources up to its limit. Now, our environment is totally polluted, we inhale the polluted air, we drink the polluted water, and eat food that are no longer one hundred percent healthy since it contains other toxic chemicals. As a result, almost everyone is suffering. These are all caused by human activities, we caused the ozone layer to have a hole, we caused the ice caps to melt, and now we caused the life of mother earth to be in danger. Hence, life is in danger.

For the past decades, climate change still continues to increase due to the fact that human activities such as cars, planes, factories, and other activities that we use add greenhouse gases to our atmosphere. And climate change can result to several drastic factors. One of which is our water. Water is one of the most important necessity in the human body for us to cope with our everyday life. We need water for so many things (i.e. industry, health, irrigation, etc). Its alarming to hear that even though people are aware that our water resources are decreasing, we still take it for granted. And most of it are just wasted and polluted. This actions will therefore impart the availability and the quality of water. These occurrence seem to happen because again, climate change is present. Climate change will always add to the problem.

Ignoring such tragedy will further lead to more problems such as droughts and flooding. If we are already facing water shortage right now, what more in the future? The connection between climate change and hydrological cycle has a long term effect on human water resources. More acceleration to the hydrological cycle may result to a severe weather and extreme conditions.

These simulations helped me in a way that it made me realize that we depend so much on reliable, clean supply of drinking water to sustain our health. Also, I saw how water is much needed in terms of agriculture, energy production, navigation, recreation, and manufacturing. However, people seem to ignore such tragedy occurring here in our society. Climate change increase water demand, which challenges water managers to simultaneously acquire the needs of our growing communities, manufacturers, etc.

So, why is water so important? There are several factors wherein without water this living thing wouldn’t exist. First, is from our plants which produces breathable air and they can only do this because there is water that is being converted then to oxygen. Second, if people would pollute water, this would affect the health of a person; and access to clean and fresh water is both important and hard to attain these days. Although water is an example of a renewable resource, still it becomes difficult and expensive to reuse if it's polluted.

With this, environmental consciousness must be our utmost priority in order for us to preserve the remaining beauty of our planet. We should put to consideration how our choices are fundamental to our own well-being and how it affects the environment.
