Reality and you

Oct 7, 2016 by Nicole Jan Trinidad

time has gone by so quickly and we haven't been noticing our acts that could potentially ruin our surrounding. i, personally, i haven't been cautious of my actions because i thought it wouldn't really affect my surrounding but i was proven wrong by the simulators that i have used. we humans tend to be blinded by our actions because we only think of ourselves and how it could personally benefit us. but little did we know that our actions mirror the way nature treats us and i think that is already apparent in the calamities and the fast increase in average temperature in our world. it affects me how some humans have the heart to touch and destroy God's creations and still have the audacity to consume and still continue to destroy the natural resources. in its implication with the simulators, let's start off with the calculation of water footprint.

when i calculated my water footprint, i was greatly surprised by how the "little things" like being a meat-eater would drastically increase my consumption of water everyday - honestly, i really did not know about this. the water footprint test is a simulator that provides you questions on how you use water in your every day routine. it asks you about how long you take in the shower or how many time you take your car to school and work. i personally find this calculator accurate because it is somehow close to how much my family consumes per cu/m every month. with this water footprint test, it made me more alarmed of my actions towards the consumption of water because only about 3% of the water on earth is fresh water and about 1% or less is readily available of use. it made rethink of the times i have wasted water on such conditions that weren't even necessary or relevant. we can't really deny the fact that water is impossible for it to disappear due to the water cycle, but it is important to keep in mind that water is only limited when it comes to its availability of use. we, not only humans but also animals, couldnt possibly survive without water even if we've tried - even Jesus drank water during his walk on the desert for 40 days. since i have mention that water is a cycle, then our water goes everywhere as well - through the lakes, oceans, rivers, streams, and even sewers - it really is a cycle. all i'm saying is that, water is already an essential part of our lives that we cannot just disregard because this is close to having no oxygen at all. through this water footprint test, i hope that i can fully vow to conserve water by using more methods like greywater and rainwater collector system.

as for the climate change simulator, it also made me reflect on my country's economic and environmental views; it made me think of how much the people in my country - specifically the Philippines - care about the environment. do they know why floods are drastic every time there's a typhoon? or why trees are getting more and more cut down? i think it made me think of the whole being of the society as well. the climate change simulator wherein you get to be the president of the european union and get to make strategies and pass policies using the given cards in the game. you have to balance the three factors: environment, economy, and popularity. at first, i didn't actually get why popularity matters as long as you are saving - specifically reducing carbon emissions - in the environment, right? but as i read the feedback of my scores, it showed that i did not care for the happiness of my people hence why i literally got a 0% on the popularity factor. the climate change simulator made me realize that being a president of a major organization and an influential leader would have its effects on the society because as a leader, you are expected to be a prime example to your people. with this game, it helps you think critically on how you can save the environment through the use of your resources and at the same time please and tend your people as well. moreover, we cannot really ignore the fact that climate change isn't something serious and that it isnt affecting us personally. i am gravely concerned about it because if the happenings in this time are already drastic, then what happens if we still continue to do so? i can't even imagine what life would be like all our resources has gone down the drain all because of our impulsiveness and stupidity. sometimes, it is important to think twice, maybe even thrice, before we make such actions - especially when others are going to be affected. nature is calling, and has been calling us for a quite some time now. this is our chance to make a change before everything gets left behind, even us.
