What did we do?

Oct 7, 2016 by Jelena Audrey Francisco

I woke up but I wasn’t really awake. When I looked at the Earth, there were less trees, more floods, less oxygen, more carbon dioxide, extinction and endangerment, less clean water, more pollution. What is happening? I cannot comprehend on how the world has gone into ruin because of human activities.

When I was a child, you could see trees everywhere and when you breathe, you would know that you had inhaled fresh air. The animals were numerous and diverse. Every time you go outside, you could hear birds chirping in the morning and crickets chirping at night, you could feel the rush of the wind brushing in your skin, and you could feel the peacefulness of the community. But that was then and this is now, people are dying due to many factors and Climate Change is one of those factors. But humans are not the only ones who are dying but also every entity that is present here on Earth.

Through these simulations, I can relate to my community in a way how humans use the resources available. These resources are water, food, energy, etc. My daily usage of water resulted to 1,218 gallons per day, 8,526 gallons per week and 444,570 gallons per year. This kind of result is very alarming because I consume too much water just for a single day. If you can imagine, with that kind of water consumption, I can give clean water to many people who have unsanitized water all over the world. These simulations help me to know the problems that I and my community contribute to the environment. There are a lot of human activities that adds to carbon emission. Because of these human activities, there is a lot of pollution that is present in the atmosphere, land, water, etc. With these simulations, I can already know that we need to act now or else Mother Nature will die because of my and our actions. Yes because of these simulations, it opened my eyes on how climate change can really affect everything that is present in the environment. It should be tackled by everyone including those people who don’t care about Mother Earth because when those people who don’t care about Mother Earth, it can enable them to care and e aware if they don’t save nature today, they won’t have a future home.

Surface water refers to the water that remains on the earth’s surface, in rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs or oceans. Groundwater is the portion of water beneath the Earth’s surface that can be collected with wells or which flows naturally to the surface. Only freshwater can be digested by humans. Water is continually moving around, through and above the Earth. It moves as water vapor, liquid water and ice. It is constantly changing its form. The movement of water is referred to as the hydrologic or water cycle. Precipitation, evaporation/transpiration and runoff. Climate Change affect the cycles in the ecosystem by when climate change alter the process of the biosphere for example, if climate change affected the biosphere, life would never be the same because biosphere is interconnected with other spheres and depends on them so if something happens in the biosphere, the other spheres would also be affected. Water is essential because first of all, without water we would be dehydrated and would die. Second, all other creatures or other living species would also die if they lack water. Lastly, without water, the earth would be hotter because water is the one of the things who cools down the earth’s atmosphere. Water nurtures our landscapes and provides habitat for wildlife.

Jelena,

Waking up to such a non green reality is definitely a nightmare.

In India the deforestation has caused a lot of climate changes.

We are midway through October and yet the oppressive heat hasn't gone.

It wasn't so a few years ago!!!

Let's keep our fingers crossed!
