All for Mother Earth

Oct 7, 2016 by Carla Perete

Recently there have been lots of environmental issues occurring in our country and Climate Change, it being the main cause of all these disasters, such as floods, intense typhoons etc, is not being addressed seriously. Due to abnormal changes of the Earth’s climate, it can also affect certain landforms and bodies of water that can cause damages to our system particularly in our water supply, the dams, which can overflow, causing major floods, or it can also be in a critical level because of El Nino which can cause water shortages all across the country. So for us, these simulationas were relevant for it alarmed us to us about the current actions that we were or we’re still doing that can greatly affect the environment negatively or positively.

Through these simulations we were able to realize how our actions can greatly affect Mother Earth. The first suimulation, the Water Footrpint calculator, made me realize on how I continue to contribute to the cause of water problems or issues across the country. It also alarmed me on how I use water irresponsibly. and how I should change my ways as well. The second simulation on the other hand, was about Climate Change. This activity or game helped me to be more open minded and to be more critical about the choices I made. This also made me realized on how our choices about our life, specifically the environment, can greatly have an effect to our own environment and how it should be more addressed and tackled seriously not only by the community, but also by the government.

Based on the Water Footprint activity, the results stated that I consume 1,990 gallons per day so if we're going to compute for a week it would be 13,990 gallons per week. In terms of drinking water, it comes from two sources: ground water and surface water. Ground water comes from the rain or snow that was produced by the process of precipitation and though this, it fills the open spaces or pore space. Also, there is a saturation zone where the subsurface is completely saturated with water. It contains saturated layers of sand and gravel that are called aquifers. Aquifers are geologic formations that contains water that is efficient for the well, which makes the water potable. It is then pumped into a storage tank then through the pipes which will make the process of distributing the flow of the water into our homes and finally in our own faucets. Surface water, on the other hand, fills the natural bodies of water such as lakes, wetlands, rivers and other surface water bodies. Just like the ground water it is also from precipitation and is also distributed to us through pipes.

Due to intense climate changes that can lead to global warming, the increase of heat can result to much stronger storms or typhoons and this is because through the warm temperature, it gives the oppurtunity for more water to evaporate in the air. Calamities such as flooding, landslide etc. can cause to a lot of damage properties such as crops, personal belongings and can even cause the fatalitites of some.

Water is essential for it gives life for it supports the needs of different species such as animals, plants and of course for us humans here in our world. Just like one of the principles of ecology, we can connect this idea to "Everything is Interconnected" because if one species goes extinct we can be all affected one way or another. Also, through water, it contributed to the landscape of the earth by shaping it and giving it a structure that can make it stable and efficient.
