Opinions: Introduction

Environment   Aug 31, 2017 by Sandra Ukaigwe

Hello All,

My name is Sandra. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I am a Chemical Engineer with over 7 years teaching experience. I am currently a graduate student in the department of Educational Policy Studies, Educational Administration and Leadership Specialization, University of Alberta and working on Climate Change adaptation policies for water resources systems from resource management and policy perspective.

I’ve always loved the countryside and over the years have developed a deep appreciation for nature’s serenity, beauty and calmness. But climate change is gradually altering natural habitats and disrupting ecosystems thereby threatening my beloved countryside. One of the intricacies of climate change is the spatial distribution of its impact. Research shows that, emissions of greenhouse gases from any geographical location on the surface of the Earth enter the atmosphere and play a role in affecting global climate. Hence, the impact of any particular emission of greenhouse gas is dispersed to other regions of the earth. Thus, people residing in countrysides or reserves who may not be significantly contributing to climate change are still very vulnerable to its impact and even at higher severity when they have significantly less adaptive capacities to respond successfully to its impacts. That’s why I am really excited about the opportunity to be a part of #Decarbonize: Decolonize for COP23, because, together we can explore innovative ways to make our countrysides and reserves more resilient to the impact of climate change.

Indeed, the threat of climate change is serious, and yet it presents exciting opportunities to make the environment more dynamic and resilient and I believe that working together especially with the youths taking the lead, we can limit the impacts of climate change on our favorite places and our planet in general. Together, we can make our environment more sustainable.

I look forward to working with you all.
