About Me
Hi!
My name is Rachel. I'm one of your mentors for the GROWS program. I grew up in Edmonton and have basically lived here my whole life.
I have a BSc in Conservation Biology from the University of Alberta and an MSc from Uppsala University in Sweden where I lived for one year.
If I had to guess how many days I spent on a farm over the last year I would say: 0.
I drive through the farmland around Edmonton at least once a week to get to a friend's barn in Parkland county where I board my horse. However, I do not have anyone in my network who works the land and grows food for people. I have a lot of family who grow small vegetable gardens, but that's about as close to food production as I get. Last year I started my own vegetable and herb garden, but it has been a slow process of learning how to grow your own food properly.
I recently moved out to Sherwood Park, and I live a 10 minute walk away from a Wal-Mart. This allows me to walk to get my groceries during warm weather, but I also wish I had the money to go to the farmers market and get my food from there more often.
I can't wait to read your blogs and get to know you guys better! If you have any questions feel free to email me or message me through the virtual classroom.
