About Me
I have been teaching English as a foreign laguage for 25 years. I am a Professor in Applied Linguistics. I studied at UCB (Universidade Católica de Brasília) and UNB (Universidade de Brasília). I am a teacher of Portuguese and English. I live in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. I have been working at CILT (a public school of languages) for 19 years.
I have never really stopped to think about the energy that I use or how it comes to me, for my use. I have never thought about it, not because I waste a lot, it is quite the opposite, but the wrong use of the energy, the problems we have with climate changings and the destruction of the Nature which it has been happening nowadays, that make me think. However, I know that everything it is connected.
The world today is very different, it seems that people do not care about their future and the future of their descendants. Garbage production is very large, deforestation is huge; oceans, rivers and lakes are real garbage dumps. The "Stone Jungle" (the cities) is built indiscriminately, not regularized.
I believe I can't live without power: there are so many electronics, gadgets that need power, light, etc.
Here in Brasilia, the majority of people use electricity and in few homes and buildings, the solar energy is used. For public transport: buses, subways and for private transportation, 99% of vehicles use gasoline, diesel, ethanol or electricity. Nowadays, there are some buses powered by a type of battery that recharges at the electrical outlet, but they are still in the testing phase.
80% of Brasilia's electricity comes from Furnas (Minas Gerais) and 20% comes from Itaipu (Foz do Iguaçú), which are hydroelectric plants, that is, our energy comes from water, its strength.
Some power failure or power outage happen in our cities in Brasilia, especially during the rainy season. And we have been through water crises in 2017 too.
This all happens because of pollution and misuse of water and electricity. Finally, I think in a future full of peace and conscious minds that can teach us the best way to be done and to live in our planet.
