Costa Rica-Tri-Regional (Continental) Collaboration

Nov 1, 2017 by Lucia Torres Bustamante

We studied REDD+ in a case study as if it was a viable option to protect the forests but in additional findings and meetings with indigenous communities we hear de the opinions of them. They shared with us that they are in complete opposition of this project because REDD+ wants to prohibid the entrance of people to the forest and that for indigenous people is like cutting their history and cultural traditions. Also it affects their economy, they explained to us that they produce a cream made of plants and for producing it they need access to their forest and by not allowing them to enter we are taking away a part of them.

REDD+ is a project that can be viable if they get indigenous involved. Maybe not just closing the entrance to the forest but just ensuring that the ones that get in are not damaging it. A lot of the times we make projects in pro of the environment but sometimes we don’t take into consideration the people that are most getting affected by these proposals.

Well said Lucia,

REDD+ is a great project with great objectives and goals. And getting indigenous people involved is  a great idea as we have learnt so far. Gratefully, we all coming to that understanding that no form of knowledge is superior to another. All that is required is for people to understand why certain actions are necessary before they can buy into it.

Nice one Lucia.
