The Alberta Oil Sands & The Future of Alberta’s Fossil Fuel Industry

Environment   Oct 19, 2017 by Alicia Cappello

I noticed that one of the case studies completed for this course, for the Canadian schools, was about the Alberta Oil Sands (or the Tar Sands as it is more negatively referred to). Last night I had the pleasure to attend an Edmonton LitFest Event at MacEwan University with Chris Turner and Kevin Taft. Chris is an activist and author from Calgary who has written many books on the environment. And Kevin Taft is a former Liberal MLA and Lead of the Opposition in the Alberta Legislature. They were at LitFest to talk about their new books, “The Patch: The People, Pipelines, and Politics of the Oil Sands” by Chris and “Oil’s Deep State: How the petroleum industry undermines democracy and stops action on global warming — in Alberta, and in Ottawa” by Kevin. Both books are about Alberta, the Oil Sands, and the future of Alberta’s fossil fuel industry. While the books look at the situation from two different perspectives, they’re complementary to each other. If anyone is interested in learning more about the fossil fuel industry in Alberta, or the role the fossil fuel industry plays in the politics of the province, I would highly recommend one or both books.

BTW, LitFest is a festival held in Edmonton’s every fall to celebrate non-fiction books, and ONLY non-fiction books. If you’re an Edmontonian or an Albertan, I would highly recommend you attend if you can!
