Anti Fracking Efforts in Algeria

Fracking is when fresh drinkable water, chemicals and sand in forced at high pressures into rock deposits underground. When the rock breaks shale gas and oil can be recovered from inside of it. There are a series of issues conserving this extraction of gas, for example in this country water is scarce but for this process 15 to 20 million liters of water is used leaving a lot of people without water. Also in this process there is a very high risk for the chemicals to leak into the aquifer reserves and completely destroy the water supply underground. Even with all the problems created due to fracking Algeria isn’t even the one that uses the oil. This oil is sent to Europe for sole European use.

Since this project was first introduced it has created a lot of controversy surrounding it, thanks to this people started protesting forcing the operations to be suspended. Recently Sonatrach, a hydrocarbon company made some arrangements with multinacionales like Shell, ENJ and Talisman to tap into the gas reserves. Unfortunately for them to just decide to start with fracking again is way to easy due to a law that benefits the people that get into this business.

Yes Lucia, there is still much controversy around fracking. But what is not is under dispute is the  threat posed by fracking to water resources systems.

Discussions on the pros and cons of fracking are deeply divided at the moment... Please can you share your thoughts about fracking?

But whatever our views are, we all have to stand up for clean air, water, environment and the likes, its our collective responsibility.

Nice picture you included....)
