Costa Rica - Indigenous Responses

Education   Oct 7, 2017 by Juan Carbone

How is this representation of climate change similar to the other things you’ve read/viewed? How is different?

Where do you see the influence of Indigenous peoples in this video? Where is it missing?

I think the influence of indigenous people is in the whole video. As they explain how finally their word is heard, the Declaration in which their rights have to be respected. And how they want to be involved in helping to stop deforestation, for the earth and for their own homes that nowadays are being damaged.

What solutions to climate change does this video propose?

In this video it is very well explained the reason why the earth is warmer, and the consequences it brings. The high emissions of carbon combined with deforestation is the main problem. Part of the solution is an agreement called REDD+, this means REDUCING EMISSION FROM DEPORESTATION AND FOREST DEGRADATION. This agreement defined that developed countries will invest in Stopping Deforestation. These countries will have to take responsibility for what they have done with industrialization. Forests are needed to stop emissions of carbon, but also, because they are the home of millions of indigenous peoples.

Do you agree with the representation of Indigenous peoples and climate change action in the video? Why or why not?

Yes I agree. I think it is very important they are included, they can help, they know about living with balance. And they also need to preserve their homes and their way of living.

What are the opportunities and challenges in taking seriously Indigenous perspectives of climate change? Consider factors that facilitate or hinder ethical responses to climate change, including social and economic inequities, political dynamics, marginalization, discrimination, state, military/police power, etc.

It is very important to have their perpective. Nowadays developed countries are always thinking in how to make more money, this brings to more consumption, more industries working. But do they think in the way to do it. Do they think in the earth? In the generations to come? Indigenous perspective is very important. They have the knowledge, they know how to respect the earth. The challenge in taking the indigenous perpective seriously is how all this information can be balanced and really put in practice in this world today.

Marginalization has occurred with indigenous peoples in the past, their word wasn’t heard. But with the Declaration, this has changed also. I think that it is important to work all together with the same purpose, save the planet.

Absolutely Juan, every system of knowledge is of equal importance. And this is the time for everyone to work together to ensure the sustainability of our one and only planet

#REDD+

Indeed you have a strong understanding of the ideas being discussed. But how would you use this knowledge to contribute to the solution(s) of the climate change challenge?

Great job!
