Costa Rica: Pre-Bilateral - Case Study

Oct 6, 2017 by Daniela Solera

The Project Crucitas is located in San Carlos and was proposed in 2006 by an industry called Infinite Gold, its objective was to build a mine in San Carlos to extract the gold. This project has been reject several times because of its environmental impacts, since the place where the project is located is near the river San Juan, reason why it is considered a very sensitive environmental zone, although in spite of that San Carlos has a lot of biodiversity; as a short term problem, its affects the economy in the zone, since the industry in charge of the project offered to a good amount of people in the zone different kind of jobs in the project, as a consequence of the cancelation of this, all those people were left without job; and as a long term problem is the use of mercury, this project would help the citizens living near it by offering them work, but it would also affect those who live in the lower cities because they need to use mercury to extract the gold from the mine. Mercury is a very dangerous elect for the human body, the inhalation of mercury vapor can be harmful to the nervous system, digestive system, lungs and kidneys. Thats why building the mine would not only affect the people living near it but will also affect the land and water, since the project was canceled the industry leaves the property, leaving the project without supervision , reason why recently 22 people entered the property and tried to extract gold; however although all the damage that can be caused by the project is known, many of the people in the area keep insisting that the project should be achieved, since if the project is carried out it would help in the economy of the people of the zone, despite the fact that they would be using mercury and that would affect workers' health.

Yes Daniela, sadly, sometimes our motivations are purely based on economic benefits. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as many countries/groups and even individuals are indicating  strong interest in the fight against climate change, and we will definitely achieve the goal of keeping our planet safe as we all put in out best.

You definitely have great understanding of the subject being explored. Please ensure you share this knowledge with your friends and your community....:)

Well done!
