United States: 2b Indigenous responses to climate change

Sep 30, 2017 by Sidney Dunten
  • How is this representation of climate change similar to the other things you’ve read/viewed? How is different?

It is similar to other things I read while also being different. First it is similar to other articles I've read/viewed because it talks about how indigenous people can help stop climate change and deforestation. Second it also talks about how indigenous people have the right to chose who can do what on there land. Its different because in other articles I've read/viewed because other articles talked about how people should be kicked out of the forest or banned from entering. This was also like others because it had a video or paragraph saying how bad global warming was for us and the environment. This article was different from most of the articles I've read/viewed but they mostly had the same point.

  • Where do you see the influence of indigenous peoples in this video? Where is it missing?

I think the indigenous people influence the environment by living in the heart of the environment. They influence the environment because the own the land they live on and if a company wants to cut down trees there they would have to ask them first. So if they said no to a company wanting to cut down trees in there area then the company would not be aloud to. Also if they were to tell loggers to get of there land the loggers would have to. If they say no to company's then that could help stop global warming.

  • What solutions to climate change does this video propose?

It proposes that indigenous people agree to use REDD+. Which would promote them to say no. Also it would give them resources and knowledge of climate change and its effects. It also stops governments from forcing people to allow company's on there land. In the end REDD+ would help the environment and the people who live in it.

  • Do you agree with the representation of Indigenous peoples and climate change action in the video? Why or why not?

I do because it seems reasonable. First it will help people know more about climate change and its effects on earth. Second it will help people say no to greedy corporations and company's that want to cut down the forest. Third of all REDD+ could help slow down climate change and maybe even stop it. With REDD+ people could chose what to do with there land and the government wouldn't be able to tell them to allow greedy company's. Also with REDD+ the government would assist them and invest money in to forests to help them stay clean and healthy.

  • What are the opportunities and challenges in taking seriously Indigenous perspectives of climate change? Consider factors that facilitate or hinder ethical responses to climate change, including social and economic inequities, political dynamics, marginalization, discrimination, state, military/police power, etc.

The opportunity's is that the indigenous community's would have the chance to make a difference but the challenge would be that big corporations and company's would try to bribe and stop them. The opportunity's would be that they would be able to slow down climate change or stop it. Also they might be able to get government support and funds. The challenges would be that the company's might convince the government that letting them cut down trees would get them a lot of money. The also might try to bribe them like I said earlier. If the community's could overcome bribes and other ways that company's might try to get them to let them cut down all the trees it would be a great plan.
